CHANGE YOUR WORLD

Small Business Still the Backbone of the Economy.

by John Clemens, Business Television Network Staff Writer

There has been a lot of focus during the previous six months, on the financial health of a few large corporations. Statistically there are about a thousand or so large corporations that employ about a million people in the USA. That's a lot of financial muscle in our economy granted, but it's only a fraction of the contribution that small corporations and businesses contribute. According to the US Census Bureau; 75% on our GNP comes from these smaller corporations and businesses, creating well over 100 million jobs.

Small Business is going through difficult times right now, not because they are new, poorly managed or deliver inferior products. They are struggling because they didn't watch the economy, have enough resources to save money for a rainy day or adapt their marketing efforts to give them the visibility that they need. Take a company that I recently heard of with annual revenues of about $6 million dollars. They were providing jobs for two dozen people. That's two dozen families who in turn contribute local taxes and spend in the cities in which they live. This business, like many others, has recently cut overhead and laid off employees for the first time, reduced hours and cut paychecks, by about 25 percent. But they are are optimistically, updating processes and creating new products for their staff to sell. They see opportunity in change and are doing everything they can...

My point is that there is power in numbers. A huge portion of our business economy is made up of small business. When we lay off 25 percent of our work force — or worse yet — go out of business in record numbers, that many fewer people will be spending money on mortgages, buying cars, traveling, hiring house cleaners and landscape services, getting their hair cut, or taking care of their homes.

We need to start paying attention to these small businesses. They are the engine that powers the economy. They are the ones building and supporting the local communities. Take for example when the large financial institutions stopped lending, how were projects completed on the local level? In some cases it was the small community banks that stepped in. They see opportunity in change and are doing everything they can...

Big is not always better; But it does mean that you have a larger voice and create a bigger fear factor when potential failure becomes the issue of the day. Small business is not the step child of our economy! This is the time for small business to stand up together and get the attention you deserve. Reality is what it is; Small Business will have to take care of itself and the only voice you will have is when you come together, work together and claim your rightful place at the table.

Business Television Networks's focus on creating a voice for small business and a platform to be heard on has enabled our company to be here when you need us the most.We are independent media, delivering real information to business and to consumers. As a footnote; A speaker at a recent business meeting that I attended, who was in his 70's asked the question; "Why am I successful in business? Because I share risk with my clients, their success becomes my success and I do everything I can to be excellent!" This is what Business Television Network is promoting; Small Business Excellence.

We see opportunity in change and are doing everything we can...
